Business and legislative leaders from all over Northern California, including Yuba, Butte and Colusa counties, gathered on the steps of the state capital Monday to unveil a new name for the 20 northernmost counties in California. No longer is the geographic area from Sutter, El Dorado, Placer, Lake and Mendocino counties north to the Oregon border called “Northern California.” The geographic area, the size of New York State, is now called Upstate California.
He said this region can offer much to businesses willing to look to set up shop here. He said the region has a diverse and ready work force, affordable housing and property and a high quality of life that can’t be matched by other regions. It provides an environment that is very conducive for business, he said.
“(Businesses) never even think of north of Sacramento,” said Colusa
County Supervisor William Waite. “We have to show them what we have to
offer.” The Upstate California Economic Development Corporation will work to seek out business looking to relocate and direct them to Upstate California communities that could be best for the company. Each county will contribute funds to the UCEDC so the council may highlight their communities. “There is a great part of California that is willing to welcome you,” said assemblyman Dick Dickerson, R-Redding, to businesses. He said businesses need to think outside the box and look at the Upstate California region as an un-seized opportunity that could open doors for businesses willing to relocate here. “We’re not just mining and logging anymore,” said Assemblyman Sam Aanestad, R-Grass Valley. He cited high-tech firms that have moved into his district that are thriving, and added that others could share in the productive climate. “I believe this effort to focus attention on Northern California is positive,” said John Fleming, Yuba County Economic Development Coordinator. Following up on Burkhardt’s comments, he said Yuba County offers a low tax burden, access to the Yuba County airport and easy access to major highways. He cited the development of the Yuba County sports and entertainment zone and the surrounding properties that could provide excellent business opportunities to businesses willing to relocate there. |
