TO ONLINE NEWS The second
Microenterprise Training Program class recently graduated 18 business
entrepreneurs from the Yuba-Sutter area.
Developed as a joint partnership with the County of Yuba, the Yuba
College Small Business Development Center (SBDC), and the Yuba-Sutter
Economic Development Corporation. A
microenterprise is defined as a small business that employs five or fewer
employees and operates to a small budget.
In the Yuba-Sutter area, 72 percent of the businesses fit this
definition. Accredited through
the college system, the training program is designed to give business
owners and potential business owners the essential expertise in marketing,
research, financial planning, and marketing strategies to help assure
success in their business ventures. The
Yuba College SBDC provides training and consulting services. The training classes or a minimum of 12 contact hours with an
SBDC consultant is a requirement to access the Micro Loan Program, which
provides loans ranging from $250 to $25,000.
The Yuba College SBDC assists clients with preparing the loan
application, and Yuba-Sutter Economic Development Corporation assesses
client loan applications and services the loans approved. The training and
loan program was modeled after the Yuba City Entrepreneurs’ Training
Program, which provides a similar program for the Yuba City area and also
recently graduated 18 business entrepreneurs. Graduation was
held on December 15 for the Yuba-Sutter program and December 13 for the
Yuba City program. Graduates
from both programs include: Jay Alexander, Brenda Allard, Brad Bell, Kelly
Bertsch, Gary Brown, Thomas Carson, Arthur Catlin, Rodolfo Cazares,
Deborah Cheever, Kim Eldeen, Jim Galindo, Robert Garcia, John Grochowski,
Silvia Hinojosa, Julie Hudson, Pam Ikerd, Don Jensen, Ronald Morales,
Karen Morris, James Murphy, Sr., Chad Navarrot, Leslie Peters, Elizabeth
Preston, Javckie Quigg, Nani Schneider, Nanette Thurman, and Jesse
Villasenor. Special
recognition was given those who completed the program perfect attendance:
Sharon Cobbold, Bob Gauper, Richard Langer, Todd Mathews, Tevis Morrison,
Sharron Perkey, Robert Roesner, Rodd Tabler and Cristina Welch. The next
Yuba-Sutter Microenterprise Training Program is scheduled to begin on
February 15, 2001. There are
a couple of spots still open and interested entrepreneurs can sign up by
calling the SBDC at 749-0153. The programs are
funded through the City of Yuba City and County of Yuba under the Yuba
County Job Creation Investment Fund Grant, Community Development Block
Grant Funds, and program income from revolving loan fund programs.
