First Yuba-Sutter Microenterprise Training Program
Class Graduates

Six individuals from Yuba and Sutter Counties recently graduated from the first Yuba-Sutter Microenterprise Training Program. The program has been developed through a joint partnership with the County of Yuba, the Yuba College Small Business Development Center, and the Yuba-Sutter Economic Development Corporation. A microenterprise is defined as a small business, employing five or fewer employees, and a low budget. In Yuba-Sutter, over 72 percent of the businesses fit this definition.

The microenterprise training program is designed to give business owners the essential expertise in marketing, research, financial planning, and marketing strategies to help assure success in their business ventures. The training and consulting services are provided by the Yuba College Small Business Development Center. The training classes or a minimum of 12 contact hours with an SBDC business consultant is a requirement for accessing the micro loan program, which provides loans ranging from $250 to $25,000. The Yuba-Sutter Economic Development Corporation assists clients in finalizing loan applications and services the loans approved.

The training and loan program has been modeled after the Yuba City Entrepreneurship Program and provides smaller loans with less stringent credit requirements, making business ownership a possibility for clients currently in CalWORKs and other assistance programs. Scholarships and discounts are also available to qualified individuals to assist those that may require financial assistance.

Graduation was held on July 26, 2000. Graduating as the first class were Jennifer Anderson and Jaymee Soni, opening up a parent/child development center called "Play Central"; John Bright, expanding his tax analysis preparation service that is targeted to the earned income population; Ray Brooks, opening a pharmacy in Brownsville; Michael Davis, working on a food product; and Gabriel Singh, working on an exotic produce business. The training consists of 14 consecutive weeks and will he held at the Yuba City Mall Community Classroom, near the food court. For further information about the training program or to register to attend, please contact the SBDC at 749-0153.
