Highlights of County Department Activity

From the Economic Development Coordinator . . .
Welcome goes to John Fleming, the County's new Economic Development Coordinator.  John's responsibilities include recruiting and assisting new businesses in the County and in particular the new Sports and Entertainment Zone.  His first projects included assembling an Employment Task Force that ratified the County's first Economic Development Strategic Plan March 2000, and creating a Marketing Committee and Advertising Sub-Committee to identify and implement some of the objectives in the Strategic Plan. A business retention program is being developed along with a Yuba County Image Campaign that will promote Yuba County as being recently ranked a "Best Place to do Business" in California (Forbes Magazine, May 2000).

Call 530-749-7558 for more information. Yuba County Economic Development is located at 215 5th Street, 3rd Floor, Marysville, CA  95901.

From the Airport Manager . . .
A number of corporate aircraft hangars are beginning to get underway at the entrance area of the airport.  A total of 14 lots are available, with sales now completed on lots 1-7.  Joe Souza Gyroplanes have purchased lot 7 and will be moving out from the front line early 2001.  This will open up the front line for new capital investment.  The front line buildings were built some 40-50 years ago and are now a maintenance problem.

Activity in the Industrial Parks are also starting to heat up.  Land sales negotiations are underway for the purchase of 5.43 acres at the entrance area of Skyway Drive.  Watch for more details and an announcement of the location.

Automation has taken over again and removed our "human" weather observers and now rely on the ASOS as the official weather observer.  ASOS refers to the Automated Surface Observation System that now controls weather data throughout the United States.  Yuba County Airport was one of about the last 115 in the nation to be closed.  The ASOS versus "humans" is not necessarily a closed subject with many airports.  A fight continues to retain the "human" element, but automation is sure to win out in the long run.

From the Agricultural Commissioner . . .
The Yuba Watershed Protection and Fire Safe Council continues to work on implementation of the $999,000 grant funded under Proposition 204, the Safe, Clean, Reliable Water Supply Act - Delta Tributary Watershed Program.  This Grant focuses on preservation of the Yuba River watershed by protecting forest health through reduction of fuel loads which could contribute to catastrophic fires. Call 530-741-6484 for more information.

From the Library . . .
"Mommy and Me" Storytime at the Yuba County Library:

Mommy and Me will be a flexible storytime sponsored by the Yuba County Library. A weekly, open-house style time slot will be set aside for mommies (or daddies) to come in and read to their children. The Children's Librarian and/or Families for Literacy staff will be available to give assistance and ideas.

A trial series of Mommy and Me will be held during February. The Library's Community Room will be available from 3 to 5 on Mondays. A selected collection of library books will be available to choose from; however, participants are not limited to those books. Refreshments will be available for the family to enjoy during
their storytime.

Mondays at 4:00, children in grades 4 to 8 are invited to come to our KidSurfers Club. Meetings will center around computers. There is a Preschool story time on Tuesdays at 11:00. There is also a storytelling time on Thursdays at 4:00, for preschoolers through grade 6.
