Yuba County Updates Its
Strategic Plan

Board Receives 2000 Year in Review Presentation

The Yuba County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the 2001 Economic Development Strategic Plan following a special presentation by Economic Development Coordinator John Fleming and Airport Manager and Enterprise Zone Director Mary Hansen at its February 27 meeting. The presentation highlighted economic development accomplishments during 2000 and included milestones that had been achieved as identified in the County’s first Strategic Plan ratified March 21, 2000.

Highlights from the previous year included the formation of a Marketing Committee to help create material to promote specific areas for development in Yuba County and to focus local economic development resources. Three advertisements were published in Area Development, Location California, and Outlook California magazines generating dozens of inquiries and greater interest in potential business relocation and expansion efforts. A web site was published at www.yubacounty.org to provide business, airport, enterprise zone, and tourism information in an online format. A volunteer information booth was assembled for the Sacramento Valley Amphitheatre’s first season and pocket recreation, hotel, and restaurant guides were created to capitalize on more than 270,000 attendees over 26 major concert events.

“In the first month of concerts alone Yuba County experienced an increase in fuel and service station sales of 16.3% and hotel receipts were up 17.8% over the same period from the previous year,” stated Fleming. “As we increase capacity and improve our infrastructure, the best is yet to come for tourism opportunities in our region.”

An airport master plan update and airport use study was also initiated during this time to examine future Motorplex impacts and increased traffic. A business incubator study was conducted, a business welcome mat program rolled out, and an economic development logo was created to brand planned marketing material and related projects.

In addition, Yuba County received both State and national attention in 2000. The Yuba-Sutter Enterprise Zone was recognized for an Excellence Award for the implementation of a new microenterprise training and loan program, and the region was recognized by Forbes Magazine as being in the top three rural California “Best Places to do Business.”

What new economic development activities are described in the 2001 Economic Development Strategic Plan?

“The creation of marketing material to update the airports available industrial parcels will provide the County with a professional response to an increasing number of inquiries that we are receiving,” said Hansen. “We will also be looking to promote commercial properties at the Motorplex and Plumas Lake Specific Plan areas, and additional industrial properties along Rancho Road, and ramp up our advertising and trade show efforts to promote the County.”

Yuba County’s Economic Development Strategic Plan is scheduled for annual review by the Board of Supervisors to update sections related to demographics, economic forecasts, objectives, and staff work plans.
