TO ONLINE NEWS The Yuba City Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which includes both Yuba and Sutter counties, moved up to first in the State of California and 10th nationwide in Forbes Magazine third poll of “Best places to do business.” Last year the Yuba City MSA was ranked third behind the Chico-Paradise and the Yolo metropolitan areas and rated 27th overall nationally. “There’s an overall positive can-do attitude that continues to rise to the surface that we probably have not seen for many years,” maintains Yuba-Sutter Economic Development Corporation Director Tim Johnson. “We’ve placed a greater amount of attention and focus on economic development programs in Yuba-Sutter over the last couple of years,” adds Yuba County Economic Development Coordinator John Fleming, “and we’ve only scratched the surface of the potential that we have in this area to develop our own identity apart from and complementary to the other metropolitan markets in Northern California. What’s essential to note is that for the first time we are being ranked at the top of a business-friendly list by a prestigious, nationally recognized publication,” Fleming added. “We have a lot more going for us in recent years,” says Yuba-Sutter Enterprise Zone Director Mary Hansen, “and we’re doing a better job of getting this message out.” Hansen points to the attraction of the Sacramento Valley Amphitheatre, now going into its second concert season, as a prime example of a local success story. Other developments that have occurred include a warehouse distribution center for SYSCO Food, Inc. in south Sutter County, the expansion of new medical facilities in both Yuba City and Marysville, and the proposed $100 million Motorplex at Yuba County. Since the last Forbes ranking, the California Technology, Trade and Commerce Agency and the California Association of Local Economic Development (CALED) have recognized Yuba County with statewide awards for its role in attracting the Sacramento Valley Amphitheatre. Forbes examined a number of different attributes to rank each community on its business dynamics and momentum, including relative wage and salary growth, relative job growth, high-tech concentration, tech output growth, and number of tech clusters. Similar to last year, the Yuba City MSA scored best on relative job growth and tech output growth, and fared poorest in the category of technology clusters and high-tech concentration. According to the results of the Forbes Magazine “Best Place to do Business” ranking published this month, the Yuba-Sutter region is leading smaller metropolitan areas in California in its ability to generate positive wage and salary growth. ############# Obtain additional information about Yuba County’s Economic Development Program by email at jfleming@yuba.org or call John Fleming at (530) 749-7558.
