TO ONLINE NEWS Strawberry Valley Community Planning Meeting Minutes for January 9, 2001 Regarding: Creation of Community Action Plan for
Strawberry Valley Next Meeting: Tuesday, February 6, 2001 Location: Strawberry
Valley BACK TO STRAWBERRY VALLEY HOME | BACK TO COMMUNITY PLANNING HOME
Minutes: The
meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. at the Gold Cup Lodge by
President Lee Aseltine. The
following members were in attendance;
Jim Hixson, Mary Lou Lauck, Philip Sciortino, Jackie Armstrong, Don
Armstrong, Jerry Fleury, Jay Parnell, Ken Frankovich, Peri Sutherland,
Leonard Travis, Nate Bartlett, Sharon Pearl, and Leslie Arsenault.
James Connell of YSEDC was also present. Lee
Aseltine discussed the training required for members of the fire
department. It was decided
that members should be certified in CPR and 1st Aid training
prior to SVCG soliciting property for the proposed fire department. Lee
gave a brief overview of what was discussed at the Steering Committee
meeting and provided documentation showing Strawberry Valley was
established in 1851. If we
want to celebrate Strawberry Valley=s
150th birthday, we will need to take steps to do it this year. Peri
Sutherland gave a report on the benefits of developing mountain bike
trails, staging areas, and guided biking tours.
She stated she had spoken with a Forest Service representative who
stated that funds may be made available for a staging area with bathrooms.
Peri learned that another entity was attempting to establish guided
bike tours through Plumas National Forest in Yuba County.
Peri said she will do more research on this matter and keep us
posted. It
was suggested that perhaps a non-profit organization could be established
but James Connell advised us that audits would be required.
This would involve hiring a bookkeeper and having insurance
coverage so this idea was discouraged.
James
Connell provided information on the State and Private Forestry (S&PF)
Economic Action and Community Assistance program
components of the National Fire Plan.
Copies of and information on the required grant application forms,
assurances and certifications are available on the Office of Management
and Budget web site: www.whitehouse.gov/omb/grants/index.html Many
members of the Strawberry Valley Citizens Committee are concerned about
the cemetery and are willing to donate time and energy to pull weeds and
cut down brush. The members
of the Cemetery Board will be contacted and asked for input prior to
organizing volunteers to clean up the cemetery.
The
top priority is getting a Strawberry Valley sign with a brief history.
At the minimum it should read Established 1851 and elevation
which is 3747'. There was a
discussion concerning what material the sign should be made of and how it
should be built. Several
members have ideas and were encouraged to bring drawings for consideration
to our next meeting. James
Connell said he will find out the process for the State, County, or Forest
Service to place an historical sign. The
meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m. The
next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at 7 p.m.
(Members decided to hold future meetings on the first Tuesday of
each month.) Respectfully Submitted, Mary
L. Lauck, Secretary If
you have any questions regarding the Community Action Planning process,
please contact James Connell at the YSEDC, (530) 751-8555, or John Fleming
