Seeking to tap home-grown artistic talent, the Yuba County Board of
Supervisors recently requested a competition for local residents to create
a flag that represents the County’s background and rich history. The
completed flag or banner will be used for formal functions and local
fairs, festivals, and parades.
Ric Teagarden, Superintendent of Schools for Yuba County has offered $100
to the grade 7 – 12 winner and $50 to the runner-up. Deb Biladeau Design,
Inc. is providing her services to prepare the finalist’s artwork for the
custom flag design. Additionally, the Yuba-Sutter Fairground and Regional
Arts Council have donated tickets for various functions to the contest
finalists.
“This is an exceptional opportunity for Yuba County students to gain an
understanding of their common history and heritage in a creative, artistic
format,” commented Superintendent Teagarden. “I enthusiastically support
education-based projects like this that vividly illustrate how a community
can be drawn together by understanding its roots.”
Contestants will be judged in two age categories, “Grades 7 – 12,” and
“College and Community.” The contest begins October 1 and concludes
November 15. A final winning selection, to be made into a custom flag or
banner design, will be made by the Board of Supervisors in a public
meeting.
“The flag’s design should incorporate the history and ambience of Yuba
County using simple designs, primary colors and shapes,” explains graphic
artist Deb Biladeau. “Artists will also be asked to provide a written
interpretation of their work to assist the judges.”
The “Run it Up the Flagpole” Contest Committee has received input from a
number of organizations, including the Yuba Community College District,
Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce, Marysville Business Improvement District,
Yuba-Sutter Regional Arts Council, and the Friends for the Preservation of
Yuba County History.
