Geographically,
Yuba County is located in the northern corridor of the California capitol
region. Marysville, the County seat and one of the first seven charter
cities in California, is located midway between the metropolitan areas of
Sacramento and Chico. Considered the northeastern corner of the
Central Valley, Yuba County's economic base continues to offer abundant
agricultural crops in a rural setting. Fifty seven miles in length and 22
miles at its widest point, the County is 630.5 square miles and bounded by
Sutter County to the South and West, Butte and Plumas Counties to the
North, and Sierra, Nevada, and Placer Counties to the East. Incorporated
February 18, 1850, Yuba County is one of the original 28 counties
established in California.
The County has a varied geography,
including the confluence of the Feather and Yuba Rivers, wooded mountains,
streams, lakes, and agricultural croplands that vary from orchards to
vineyards. Elevations range from 25 feet above sea level to nearly 4,000
feet in the northern part of the County. Weather in Marysville is
typically mild, wet winters and hot summers. The average maximum January
temperature is 54 degrees and the average maximum July temperature is 96.3
degrees with an annual precipitation of 22.8 inches.
Major transportation corridors
include the north-south Highways 70 and 65, and the east-west 20,
providing easy access to Sacramento's International Airport, deep-water
port, and Interstates 5 and 80. The Yuba County Airport offers a 6006-foot
main runway for local flying opportunities and features an annual Air
Show. The County is served by the merged Union Pacific and Southern
Pacific Railways and the agricultural industries rely heavily on truck
fleets.
The Sacramento Valley Amphitheatre
(Bill Graham Presents/SFX Entertainment) began its first concert season in
June 2000 and Feather River Baseball began playing ball in Marysville. The
Motorplex at Yuba County will break ground soon to provide car racing
enthusiasts with a major Northern California entertainment venue.
Nationally-rated golf courses include the Peach Tree Country Club and
Plumas Lake Golf Course, Regional parks, including Beckwourth Riverfront
Park and Ellis Lake in Marysville, offer abundant sports-related
tournaments and cultural events and fairs.
Yuba County features recreational
areas such as Bullard's Bar dam and reservoir, Collins Lake, and over
25,000 acres of wildlife area and National Forest land. Numerous duck and
pheasant hunting clubs can be found in the County. Marysville, a
population of 12,150, and Wheatland, population 1,950, are the two
incorporated towns in the County. Other historic communities include
Timbuctoo, Camptonville, Camp Far West, and Strawberry Valley.
