Schools
The quality of an
area’s educational institutions is often a critical factor contributing to a
person’s decision as to where to live and raise a family. Education is considered one of the most
fundamental socioeconomic indicators of a successful life, and a county with
substantial, well-run schools is very attractive to parents.
School Performance
API scores have increased
in all school districts but Camptonville Elementary and Wheatland Union High. The
2004 scores are still higher than the 2002 scores. This is consistent with the
state’s policy to raise school performance to a target level by 2005.

As a measure of
verbal and mathematical abilities, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores
provide important information about how well students in the county are being
prepared for college. The highest possible score a student can receive is
1600. This is a combination of both the
verbal and mathematical sections, each with a maximum score of 800, scored and
reported separately. During the 2003-2004
school year, Yuba County public school students’ SAT scores averaged 947
compared to California’s average score of 1015.

The
ACT Assessment is designed to assess high school students' general educational
development and their ability to complete college-level work. The tests cover four skill areas: English,
mathematics, reading, and science. The
scale scores range from one (low) to thirty-six (high) for each of the four
tests and for the composite. The composite is the average of the four test
scores. During the 2003-2004 school
year, Yuba County public school students scored an average composite score of 19.6
compared to California’s composite score of 21.4.
