Labor Force

Since 2000, Northern California has been experiencing job growth while the rest of the state, especially the Bay Area, has experienced job declines.  This phenomenon has lead to an unusual labor market trend throughout Northern California even since.  Because it has been a regional center for job growth, people have been migrating into the area looking for work, especially from the Bay Area.  This is why the region has been experiencing growth in employment, coupled with growth in unemployment.  Because unemployment is growing faster than employment in percentage terms, the North State is experiencing economic growth in spite of an increasing unemployment rate.

Labor Force and Employment

Increases in labor force indicate economic growth in an area, so the percentage of change in labor force from year to year is important to prospective business owners looking for new areas in which to develop.  In addition to employed workers and unemployed county residents actively seeking work, the labor force includes workers who have been laid off and are waiting to be called back to work.

Between the years 2000 and 2005, Yuba County saw a 13.2 percent increase in total labor force with a rise in unemployment from 1,900 to 2,300.  The corresponding table displays data for total labor force, employment, unemployment, and the unemployment rate for the state, the Greater Sacramento Area, and Yuba County and its cities.

Jobs by Industry

The ability of businesses to maintain and support the demand for jobs can be measured by looking closely at a county’s various industries.  This indicator provides information on the types of businesses in Yuba County that tend to employ more people, and which are most established in the area.  According to the table showing job structure in Yuba County, in 2005 the category which employed more people was the government sector with 37 percent.  This sector includes civilian jobs at Beale Air Force Base, but not active-duty military jobs which total at least 3,500.  The next largest was the trade, transportation and utilities sector with 14 percent followed by educational and health services sector with 10 percent.
